What agencies actually look for in a portfolio

We shoot a lot of tests and digitals, which means we hear what happens after the images leave here: which frames get used, which get skipped, and what makes a booker stop.

Some of it is not what models expect.

They are assessing range, not beauty

This is the big one. A book full of your best angle in your best light is a weak book. It tells a client you have one look, which means one job.

What a booker wants to see is variation that still reads as one person. Clean and editorial. Warm and cold. Commercial smile and blank stare. Movement and stillness. If every frame has the same expression, the book is doing one-sixth of its job.

They look at the eyes first, always

Not the styling, not the location, not the light. Whether there is something behind the eyes.

Technically perfect frames with nothing going on behind them get skipped. This is why direction matters more than equipment, and why a rushed test with a hundred frames is usually worse than a considered one with thirty.

They need to believe the digitals

If the book is beautiful and the digitals look like a different person, that is a problem, not because anyone objects to good photography, but because it makes the client's job unpredictable.

Honest digitals actually make a strong book more persuasive, because the gap between the two is visibly your ability rather than the retouching.

The commonest mistakes

Too many images. Fifteen strong frames beat forty mixed ones. Every weak image drags the average down. Cut ruthlessly.

Every frame from one shoot. Even if that shoot was great, it reads as a single day rather than a working model.

Over-retouching. Skin sanded flat, jaw narrowed, waist pulled in. Bookers see this constantly and it reads as insecurity. It also means the client is disappointed when you arrive.

No full lengths. A book without them is missing information a client actively needs.

Styling that overwhelms. If the first thing anyone notices is the coat, the coat is the model.

What makes a booker stop

In our experience, three things.

A frame that looks like an actual campaign, not a test pretending to be one. Something with a real idea behind it.

Evidence you can take direction. Two frames from the same setup with genuinely different energy tells a booker more than ten frames from ten setups.

A face doing something unexpected. The industry sees a very large number of beautiful, blank photographs. The memorable ones have something slightly odd or specific happening.

How to use this

Before your next test, look at your current book and write down what is missing. Not what is bad, but what is absent. Then plan the session around that list rather than around what you already know works.

Bring the list. We will build the looks around it.
